Dear Daniel,

Dear Daniel,
I counted it fortunate to have more than a couple of dates in my college years with your brother, Matt. Talent must run in your family D.N.A. (in fact, it practically gallops). We all found Matt to be a gifted comedian, musician, and actor. I have fond memories of Matt and our dialogues about the farm in Auburn, Actors Theatre, and our families (I grew up in Western Ky too--Trigg County).

I remember one conversation in particular. When he told me that his parents let his younger brother, Daniel, take off days from school to act in "A Christmas Carol" each year, I was aghast, saying that it would be awful for his brother--I mean, taking a kid out of school for extended time was a big deal that would probably have major repercussions. Matt argued that his mom and dad knew what they were doing. "Trust me. We do things this way."

Over the years, having had opportunity to follow your career and celebrate your successes, I now officially confess: "Oh well, what did I know?"

My family will be in Manhattan next week. As we were underscoring the shows we wanted to see, I underlined "Mary Poppins." Yes, I am indeed a fan of the folk who reside at Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane, but mostly, I wanted to see just how wrong I was! LOL

My daughter is a sophomore at Hanover College (theatre major, God bless her), and as I look at her, it is unbelievable that I was just that age when I met Matt. As she and her friends would say" OMG!" We've heard good things about the show and are looking forward to seeing your performance next week.

Confessionally Yours,
Mera Cossey Corlett (Matt called me "Susie")

"As they say in email parley...OMG! I will definitely pass this on to Matt!!
-DJ"

Dear Daniel,

I just wanted to let you know it was a great honor to share the stage with you last night at the Players Club and such a pleasure to hear you speak Shaw's words. I don't think there many who can resurrect them so humanly. Bravo to an invigorating, funny and moving performance! I hope to see your musical theater work in the future!

Best,
Sarah Moon

Right back at ya, Sarah! I have a perverse adoration for that Shaw thing.... really fun to give them a shot, learn from them, and meet wonderful performers like you! Let's do it again soon!

We had our benefit Saturday night and what a HUGE success it was thanks to you and the people of the cast. The poster was a big success bringing in over 100.00. People were amazed at what I got for the auction. I can only thank you and your kindness for helping.

The clinic and the people you helped with Aids thank you from the bottom of their heart. You have a heart of gold.

I do go to the theater all the time and I do hope to maybe someday see you in Chicago to thank you in person. PLEASE thank the cast for me and God Bless all of you.

Warmest Regards

Rick Kautz

So glad it went well, Rick!
All the best,

Daniel....I dont know if you remember me or not, but I taught 4th grade in Auburn when you were in school there. I'm in Auburn for the weekend and my sister was talking about watching "Scrubs" and your dad being on there. From there we wondered what you'd been doing lately as far as Broadway. Well, we got online and there you were! I read all your accomplishments....and, wanted to let you know how proud I am of you and all that you've done. I was Vicki "Neal" at the time. Anyway...I am now living in Raleigh, NC. But, how exciting to see a former student online and read about him!!
Just wanted to say hello and wish you all the best.

Hey there! The wonder of the internet...! So glad you tracked me down.
All the best to you!

Hey Daniel. I'm taking a long shot here in emailing. You and I worked on "Florida Straits" years ago. I was the hairstylist on that project. I just wanted to say hello. I am thrilled that you are still doing shows on Broadway. Definitely congratulations on "Mary Poppins". It was exciting to go through your website and see all of your accomplishments, find out about your wife and kids and check out the galleries. Best of luck in your career.
Best wishes,
Gary Stirewalt

Wow - what a blast from the past! I have great memories from that gig. Dear Raul. Funny times, eh?
Hope you are healthy and well,

Hello Mr. Jenkins-

I saw Big River in Atlanta years ago. I didn't think I would like it, but it became one of my favorite musicals. I bought the cd and listen to it all the time. I was so impressed with the chemistry of Ron Richardson and you. It really comes through on the cd. Your voices blend so wonderfully. It has brought me hours of enjoyment.
Thanks
Barrett

Thanks so much, Barrett!
I forget sometimes that the recording is still out there, and that people really connect to it so much. I loved singing with Ron and finding the way our voices fit together - I'm so glad that comes through for you.
Thanks again!

Dear Mr. Jenkins,

In 1996 I had the honor of seeing my first Broadway shows at six years of age. That show turned out to be Big. It was that very night that I fell in love with the world of musical theatre and that it changed my life. You did in fact play a major major role in that. And for that I thank you with all my heart.

I still remember every little last detail of that show and your performance all these years later. I still must thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I know that it is considered a cliche to say that musical theatre changed my life ect. But both musical theatre and you did.

I have seen your performance in Poppins a few times and I enjoy that as well.

Thank You once again,

Ben Yellin

Hey Ben -
I am so touched that live theatre has inspired you so much - and very pleased that I happened to be in a show that meant so much to you. I wish you all the best in your life and work!
Peace,

I have only had the privilege of seeing two musicals on Broadway in my entire life. The first one was in 1985 as a teenager while visiting New York from Texas on a family vacation. It was Big River and I loved it! I bought the tape and wore it out, then the CD and wore it out and am now on yet another copy and still listen to it to this day. I've also gone to see the show several times when it has been in Texas. I was especially impressed with Mr. Jenkins and always remembered his name. So, imagine my surprise when my husband and I took our four year old to see Mary Poppins in December of 2007 and Mr. Banks was none other than Daniel Jenkins. It is amazing to me that he would be starring in the only two musicals that I've ever seen on Broadway..22 years apart! And once again, he contributed to an amazing experience for my family and me. Thanks for sharing your talent!

Joyfully,

Julie Luebbert

Julie -
That is indeed quite amazing! What are the odds?? I am so pleased to be a part of you and your family's theatre-going life. I hope you get many more trips to the city - and that we can continue our record...! All the best,
-DJ

Hi Daniel,

I didn't have a chance to say goodbye yesterday, but I wanted to say that it was a pleasure to meet you and work with you while we were waiting for Kate to arrive.

I'm hoping to catch your show later this summer or in early fall and I'll be sure to say hi. Good luck with everything. Take care.

Hey Chris -

Boy, what a crazy day, huh? I wish you great good fortune in all your endeavors... please let me know when you might make it to the show!

Mr. Jenkins,

Today, for the first time in a long time, I listened to the original cast recording of Big River. I saw you in the show way back in the 80s, bought the recording and played it until I wore out the needle on my record player. I was 16 at the time, and I had such a huge crush on you!! I even sang "River in the Rain" for my high school musical audition (sadly, my rendition was only able to snag me a chorus part - sigh!)

20 years later I'm a grown up, a high school teacher - but today, listening to the music again, I was brought back to that very special time and I felt a little like a young girl again! Funny how even though you don't know me, you were a part of that time in my life - so I wanted to write and say thank you. I hope you continue to have all the success you deserve.

With warmest wishes,

Peggy McEvoy

Dear Peggy,

It is always so touching and somehow still surprising to hear that BR has such a lasting meaning for some folks.... I am really and truly grateful that I got to be a part of something that has inspired such sweet memories. They are indeed sweet for me as well.

I wish you success and happiness as well!

Dear Mr. Jenkins,

My son, Kevin Langner, is a student at Paine Intermediate School in Trussville, AL.

His teacher is Mr. Donald (Don) Garrett. His teacher has asked the students to research a thespian. You are the thespian Mr. Garrett selected for Kevin to research. We are thinking you may know Mr. Garrett. We know that Mr. Garrett knows a lot of thespians. Mr. Garrett is the drama teacher at our school.

The students have to dress up like a character their thespian has portrayed. Kevin has selected Mr. Banks from Mary Poppins, since that is who you are currently portraying on Broadway. But in the presentation, the students are to "act" like the actor discussing themselves. On your website, the 30 Questions with Daniel, is most helpful. We just wanted you to know that we are learning about you and your theatrical work.

Sincerely,
Tracy and Kevin Langner

Hello! I am so touched and flattered that I am being included in your studies. I wish you well on your presentation - let me know if you learn anything that I can use, too!
All the best,
Daniel Jenkins

I'm watching OC & Stiggs again for the first time in 20 years and yes, it's still pretty damn funny--and King Sunny still rocks.

Just had to say so!

Cheers, Jennifer

PS: This movie had me and my friends literally laughing so hard it hurt when we were teens.

Wow. Jennifer, you get the most awesomely obscure career reference award! I still see friends from that movie - what an experience. I'm glad you're still getting some yuks from it.... And King Sunny SO still rocks!

Hi Danny from your fellow "Big River" castmate in Australia! Just saw that Mary Poppins opens this week and wanted to send our love. Tracey and I have 2 children now - 4 year old Cameron and 18 month old Grace. As you know only too well - life is not at all like before keeping the two of them to keep occupied, but we wouldn't swap it for "quids" (in Poppins I'm sure you are familiar with the expression!) Please pass on our best wishes to Kathy and the boys.
Lots of love
Nicholas and Tracey

Oh my - TWO little crazies running around down under! How fantastic to get your note. It has been a crazy and fulfilling time here. The show is open finally, so I'm hoping for a normal life pattern to emerge soon... fat chance! The boys and Kathy are well indeed. We're up for another visit any time - drag the kiddies along!!
Love,

So nice to hear from you.... All is well here - the boys grow like weeds, and I am hugely fortunate to have a job!! I really love doing it - the people are great, the show is really quite lovely - and Autumn has been glorious.... I send you big hugs - give one to Steve, too - you know Cass is here with us? She plays the Bird Lady - we have one little sweet moment together. The circle continues.....

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your performance as Mr. Banks. I caught the show on Tuesday Oct. 24th (good thing I didn't have tickets for Wednesday the 25th!)

Your portrayal was much deeper than I would have ever expected. The subtleties in your expressions, vocal inflection, and body language really communicated to the audience a man who yearns to be freed from the confines of his role in Victorian society... one who wants to feel and love and laugh. Man, you nailed it!

Although I enjoyed the other performers very much I felt you were the most "real" and I really connected to the character. I truly hope you receive a Tony nomination.

Best of luck for a long and successful run.

Regards,
Bill Russell

What a kind message - thank you so much. I am very grateful that I get to work on such an interesting character with such a rich journey. It is very rewarding to hear that it is reaching across the footlights as well....! Many thanks again for your kind words - and thanks for coming to the show!

I was one of the fill-in door men for "Big River" and saw the show several times. (the house manager, was a friend.) I have fond memories of the show and of your performance. I was also very impressed with how nice you were. Given everything that was going on in your performing life, you could have been an arrogant little SOB, but you were warm, genuine and kind --even to the help :) Best of luck with Poppins, break a leg.

Hey John -
Wow. such a nice note. I was just saying today as I was backstage waiting to go on, "Man, it takes so many people to make something like this go!" It really does. My parents took me to New York in 1985 to see Big River. I am older now, a mother of two and have since seen a lot of musicals, but Big river will forever be my favorite. We attended a "cabaret style" dinner while on vacation and the second half was all music from Big River. It brought back so many memories of that great music and your wonderful voice. We recently got the cd and now my boys and I sing and dance to Big River all the time. You are very talented and thank you for continuing to entertain.
Kate

How lovely to know that the show has such a lasting impact for you and your family. I'm very flattered that you enjoy it so much..... I recently took a road trip and listened to a performance of the book (of the original Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn) (in its entirety!) read on CD. I highly recommend it - really fun and funny - and my kids loved it! Thanks again,

I am going to be studying theatre at a school of the arts starting this fall and I already know I would someday like to work in deaf theatre. I was wondering, as a hearing person, what was it like to work among a mostly deaf cast? What sort of advice can you give me about working in such a venue? I've been working as hard as I can to learn sign and my school will be putting on a version of "Medea" this fall, starring a deaf actress named Mary Vreeland. I would like to be as prepared as possible to work on this show. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Much love,
Caroline

Hi Caroline - sorry for the late reply....! Well, you're already doing the most important thing, it sounds like. Just learning the language! You might go online and see if there are any informal gatherings in your area that are "sign only". It's blindingly fast and somewhat intimidating, but you can learn a lot and the gatherings are usually quite welcoming. Have a great time - and let me know how it goes!
Best,

Okay, so I feel silly/giddy right now to say the least. Now that I know you have a website I will keep track on things you're doing so I can (hopefully) catch you in a show. Thanks for being fabulous!

Your voice is absolutely spectacular. My father bought me the Big River cd when I was ten, and I've loved and listened to it faithfully ever since then. You're my hero. I'm attending Indiana University this fall for Music and Dance. Any words of advice? -William

Advice? Are you kidding? You're going to college - you'll have more advice than you can possibly stand! So here's what my dad told me: "Don't whistle in the dressing room and don't read your reviews." Sage wisdom I have always followed. Also, from a teacher, "If you're not 15 minutes early, you're 15 minutes late." After that we get into eating vegetables and getting enough rest..... Pretty boring stuff, I know. It's a great profession and I am so blessed to get to do it. I try never to forget that. I wish you a wonderful journey in it!

Dan,
Congratulations on your upcoming role in Mary Poppins & this is a belated thank you for a glorious "Big River" show in San Francisco! My daughter (Pascale) & I did not know what to expect from this installment of our Best of Broadway series, but we thoroughly loved the performance, purchased the original Broadway cast CD at intermission & had many of the cast autograph our playbill. We would have liked for you to sign the CD insert since we found out on the spot that you were the original Huck. Unfortunately, we missed you at the stage door. We'll have the CD with us if Mary Poppins tours - just in case you're with the touring company.
Enjoy every day,
Debbi

Hello! Well, first, I am so sorry I missed you at the stage door... it is certainly hard to recognize me without all of the fake hair! I'm so glad you and your daughter enjoyed the show. Really enjoyed Love Child tonight at Vassar Powerhouse. We were amazed at the timing cleverness humor and skill involved. Hope to see it again one day! Thank you.

How cool to get this so quickly after doing the show! I'm very gratified that you liked the piece. We're still working on it but hope to do it again sometime....
All the best.(DJ)

I saw Big River on their last week at Seattle and I was blown away. I know you weren't in the cast that time but I thought it was amazing. That play has inspired me to be an author or maybe an actress. I wish I could get a dvd of the play and the cd of the 1985 Big River but it's already too late for me. I still loved it and I wish I could've seen you being Mark Twain!

I'm so glad you enjoyed the show and even happier thatit is inspiring you! It certainly made me grow in unexpected ways....
Thanks for your note!(DJ)

Hey Dan
I saw the show in the very biggining when Tom Sawyer's song Hand For the Hog was still playing. I saw it again recently and it was cut! no hard fealings to you but why?
Loved your performance,

I think some cuts were made in this production to keep the story moving. I love that song too but the director felt we really needed to get on that raft as soon as possible! Thanks for coming -
Peace.(DJ)

I am a deaf education teacher in Denver. Another teacher and I took three of our students to see Big River this past weekend. I cant tell you haw wonderful it was for my kids to see a production in their own language. They were even able to meet Ty after the show. What a great experience. I don't know how to contact him so please pass on my message. Thank him for taking the time to chatwith the kids. They do not have mant deaf role models. Also your voice matched Huck wonderfully. I often forget there were two people for the one charater. Thanks again Erin

Hello! I am so glad you and the students enjoyed the show. It has been a remarkable experience for me as well. I will certainly pass on your message to Ty and I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you! Ty is a fantastic spirit and indeed an inspiration to deaf and hearing alike. We've had a great time in Denver and thanks for coming to see us!.(DJ)

Hi Daniel. I want you to know how much I enjoy your voice on the Big River soundrack. I was fortunate enough to be part of the cast recently at the community theater in my home town. WE are now working on our next play "spinning ino Butter" which Ive found that you performed in several years ago. Just thought that was kinda cool. I would love to see you perform some day! -janemarie roanoke

Hello Dan - I'm in my mid 30s and have been a musical theatre fan my whole life. When I started College at McGill University in Montreal I went to NYC for the first time and saw you in Big River - still one of my favourite Broadway shows. Your perfomances in BR as well as Big which I saw as well were fantastic and still stays with me today. Your dedication to your craft all these years is extremely admirable and I just wanted to say thanks for enriching my theatre experience. Best of luck. Liam (Vancouver BC )

Hey Liam
Thanks so much for your great note. I'm glad those shows made such an impression on you. I hope to get to Montreal and Quebec City someday - I hear they're gorgeous! Thanks again for remembering the time we shared in the theatre.
All the best.(DJ)

Dan-
I was lucky enough to see BIG on Broadway back in 1996 when I was 8... it has remained my favorite and most memorable experience on Broadway since. I was lucky enough to play Billy in a regional production three years ago and that has remained my favorite credit to date.

Best of luck in your remaining time with BIG RIVER!

Thanks Matt. It's great to hear from folks who have performed in these shows after their time in New York. It's been great to travel around the country a bit and do Big River in different venues too. All the best to you!(DJ)

The audience of Los Angeles are lucky!
I regret to say that I can't make a trip back to back.
We are praying for a successful run from Japan.
I am waiting for feedback from the audience in LA.

Hello! Yes the audience here is really enthusiastic. Very warm and appreciative. It is a very nice way to finish my time on the river. And the sun is shining too!(DJ)

Ok. This is the first time I've ever written to a critic! I'm usually too delicate - I believe everything I read! But in this case I know in my heart so securely that the show is not about me I can handle it....
Thank you so much for your kind words and your support of the show. It really is one of those special moments in all of our lives. I'm glad we got to play such a gorgeous theatre like that and that the audiences were so great. (Even with difficult sight lines...) I hope your holidays are warm and the New Year bountiful!(DJ)

Thank you for giving me wonderful time.

Dear Mr. Jenkins:

I attended the opening night of BIG RIVER in Philadelphia and enjoyed the production greatlyincluding your versatility in doing both Mark Twain and the voice of Huck Finn and especially your versatility on string intruments and chains. However as a stagemanager for a little theatre group who watches the aspects of the technical production almost as much as the theatrical activities I commend your for your spontaneous response on the scenery failure when the inside flat on the door stage right failed to hold. The audience realized that it was falling but your easy reaction made it look as if it were a deliberate part of the action. I have found that so many actors are so focused on their roles that they cannot react proactively to unexpected and unscripted situations. Kudos for having the presence and quickness of mind to "hold" the set and the play together.
L. Fein

Thank you so much for your sweet note - and my apologies for the delay in response. I'm just learning about this web stuff....
Yeah that was a funny moment with the set. Those are some of my favorite times on stage - when people forget lines or the set goes wacky - keeps you on your toes!
I wish you a warm holiday season in the city of brotherly love!(DJ)
